The secret to the perfect airdry…

We all know that our hair needs a break sometimes and this is where air drying comes in. Not only will it save your hair from heat damage but it’s perfect for Summer meaning less styling time and no blasting hot air in your face during a heatwave!

The results of air drying can be flat and lack lustre – no competition for the smooth and bouncy results that only a blow-dry can muster BUT airdrying doesn’t have to be that way…

Most of us can achieve the results that we’d like, it just takes a little preparation that begins with the condition of your hair. Making sure that your hair is properly conditioned no matter what your natural texture is essential. If your hair has proper moisture then it will be less prone to frizz and have plenty of shine.

Begin by……

Washing your hair with a prescriptive shampoo, appropriate to your hair type and then apply a light hold cream. Applying too much product will result in a dull finish so go for a splodge no bigger than a 10 pence piece depending on your hair length and thickness. Begin at the ends of your hair and work up towards the midlengths then use a wide toothed comb to detangle and avoid damaging your hair while wet.

If you would like volume then twist your hair high upon your head into a bun and secure with pins. Remember that your hair will dry in the way that you style it so if you want lift then the higher placed the bun, with the less hair lying flat to your head the better. For added volume you can brush your hair the opposite to your natural parting and secure it that way, then when it is dry it will have more life and movement.

When your hair is dry, which shouldn’t take too long if you’re out in the sun then let it down and detangle with your fingers to avoid frizz.

There are a few more tricks that you can try for added volume such as taking the front of your hair and fastening it in two large pin curls on the crown.

If ever you are fastening the hair up, even in a bun then take care to use hair pins that will not leave lines and never use hair elastics because they cause kinks.

If you do have any out of control sections such as at the front or sides then smooth over them with straighteners *yes this is a little bit of a cheat but it makes a big difference with only 2 seconds of styling time*

When dry. add a little oil to the mid lengths and ends for shine but again don’t use too much or this will weigh the hair down.

If you have curly hair and wish to sleep on it then the Plopping method is perfect. When your hair is washed, tip your head upside down and rake all of your hair forward with your fingers. Take a t-shirt and put it under the hair (while your head is still upside down) then tie it around your head. This method keeps your curls in shape as you sleep and stops the hair fibres being ruffled up from your pillow. A towel is no good for this technique as the fibres are too static and will give you frizz!

In the morning you can diffuse any damp parts and scrunch the hair up. If there are any crazy pieces left over then wrap the strands around a hair wand to smooth them out and give them more shape.

Using a tong or straightener to polish the fronts of your hair takes only a few minutes and can make all of the difference. Let us know how you do!
