Does braiding damage your hair and scalp?

BRAIDING IS BAD FOR YOUR HAIR – TRUE OR FALSE?
Braiding should NOT cause damage to your hair. The key is to make sure the person who braids your hair knows what they are doing, in other words only trust a professional. In actual fact, because you are having it braided rather than treated with perms or relaxer, your hair should benefit from a break from chemical treatments.
However, there are circumstances in which your hair will break and fall out and these are probably what has given rise to the myth that braiding is bad for your hair. These include:
1. Not looking after your braids properly. Your hairdresser should advise you in detail how to look after your hair – including, washing your scalp fortnightly at least, with a salon brand shampoo and conditioner, followed by a natural oil based treatment.
2.Your hair is braided too tightly, which stretches it and breaks it. If you feel it pulling on your scalp its too tight!
3. Treating your hair with a chemical relaxer shortly before having your braids done. Your hair will be fragile because relaxer works by weakening its natural strength.
4. Leaving braids in too long, which can result in your hair matting which tightens your hair, causing breakage.
So…as with many myths, there is an element of truth.
