Common hair-care myths & mistakes BUSTED!

As a hairdresser you hear all sorts of weird and wonderful ideas & stories that people have & heard about their hair!

So before you waste your time buying lots of organic produce and mixing it into a hair mask to apply at the full moon take a look at the most common myths that we hear and why they are absolutely not true!

Myth: Frequent trims makes hair grow faster.

Truth: Technically speaking, this is not true! Granted, hair may grow a little faster in the summer but that has nothing to do with the scissors and everything to do with hormones which slightly speed up the growth. Hair grows at the roots, not the ends!

However : One thing a trim will do is eliminate split ends, making hair look healthier by stopping hairs splitting and breaking which gives thicker and more even length. This means that over time your hair will seem to have grown more when in fact you are just keeping the hair and not loosing length to hairs splitting and breaking, so get booked in for a trim!

Myth: You should switch the type of shampoo that you use after it’s finished

Truth: This is not necessary, if you are happy with your shampoo then fear not! It will work the same every time you use it for weeks, months & years – and as the saying goes “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Just always make sure that you use the right shampoo to compliment your hair type.

However: If you have oily hair or use products which leave residue on the hair then you should use a clarifying shampoo to remove product build up once or twice a week  – depending on how much product you use. For a look at our full product range see here.

Myth: If you pull out a grey hair then 2 more will grow!

Truth: Not true! But plucking out those gray strands does no good! You can damage the roots and cause infection in your scalp, leaving a scar. Avoid!

Myth: Rinse with cold water for shiny hair

Truth: This beauty myth is only half false. Cold water does improve the shininess of hair but not dramatically and you won’t see any major changes.

However: It is best to avoid subjecting your hair to very hot temperatures as this can stress the hair. It is best to use luke-warm water (instead of freezing cold!) once a week to increase the circulation around the hair follicles and massage your scalp with the fingertips to stimulate healthy hair growth.

Myth: You can mend split ends with the right products.

Truth: I’m afraid once you’ve split your ends then there’s no going back ! The only thing to be done is to cut them off and regular trims are essential to keeping split ends at bay, particularly if you use a lot of heat on your hair! Split ends are caused when the hair is dry and brittle and so it’s important to keep your hair moisturised with good conditioner & hair oil.

However: Products containing silicone or beeswax can temporarily seal ends together, making hair appear healthier and feel softer & more manageable. Alternatively a Kerastraight treatment does wonders for the appearence of split ends.

Myth: Brush your hair with 100 strokes per day

Truth: All you need is a few strokes with a brush to style hair and spread the natural oils from roots to ends whereas anything extra is unnecessary strain on the hair. Overbrushing weakens the hair and can lead to breakage.

When hair is wet if you need to brush it use a wide toothed comb and comb gently from the bottom up. Remember hair is weakest when wet!

Myth: You must shampoo every day

Truth: Shampooing too frequently can harm hair by drying it out and cause your scalp to overproduce sebum making hair seem more oily.

If you have extremely oily hair and shampoo twice a day, cut back to once. If you shampoo daily, try every other day instead. It can take a few weeks for your scalp to get used to it but it will be worth it in the end – you will save on products and your hair will be less dry, bonus!

Myth: Blow-dry hair from dripping wet

Truth: This will make not only be very difficult and take ages to dry &  style your hair but  it will cause a lot of heat damage.  Always rough dry your hair with cool air before you blow-dry into a style & always use heat protection!
