Care for your hair through Autumn & Winter

The cold months can be hard on your hair & scalp with the cool air, central heating and the styling problems caused by wearing hats causing an array of problems.

Follow Anne’s tips to combat dull fly away hair through Autumn and Winter

Dry unruly hair comes hand in hand with cold temperatures with hair losing its shine and styling efforts made pointless the minute that you step outside!

This is down to a few reasons;

  • The cold outside air and heated inside air are both low in moisture which can cause hair to dry out and look fly away
  • If you are a fan of hats then the material will rubbing against the hair creates static electricity and upon taking it off you may look like you’ve just had a run in with an electrical current!

All of this causes hair to be dull and extra hard work to style (just what you need!) These simple hair care tips will help reverse and prevent the attacks of the winter months on your hair and help you keep your hair and your head in check!

Caring for your hair in the colder seasons

  • Heat and friction from central heating and wearing extra fabrics mess with the natural structure of your hair in it’s normal state. This aggravates the hair cuticles which damages the hair structure leading to brittle, dull-looking hair.

  • Prevention: A rich conditioning treatment with plenty of oil extracts keep the hair moisturised meaning it is less prone to damage and will also smooth out any already damaged hairs. It is advisable to invest in a salon treatment 2-4 times a month or  good quality hair care products to do your own treatments at home. The exquisite oil range from Matrix is perfect.matrix-exquisite-oil-sample

    * Tip: Add a few drops of exquisite oil to your shampoo/conditioner or work the oil through the ends of damp hair to keep it soft and add shine*

    Unruly static hair can be one of the peskiest hair woes we find in winter. Heated indoor air and the contact of your hair with other fibres such as the fabric fibres of hats, headbands, and clothing are to blame. The movement of these fibres on your hair causes static electricity in the same way a balloon rubbed against your hair would, causing it to stand on end! Not good!

  • Prevention: The way to prevent this lies in your choice of styling products. You need a product that will weigh the individual hairs down enough to control them while keeping your hair looking bouncy and full of life! Products such as Design Pulse Go Big hair mousse, Get Action wax, and Biolage Exquisite hair oil will do the trick.

  • The lack of moisture in the air can also cause a very dry scalp because it will be secreting less sebum, this is the natural oil which is produced to keep your hair and scalp healthy. This can lead to itchy dandruff which can cause anguish, irritation and of course embarrassment.
  • Prevention: A good quality anti-dandruff shampoo with proven results. The Matrxi SCALPSYNC range is ideal for any scalp related problems. The anti-dandruff shampoo will leave your hair feeling light and refreshed & your scalp soothed without a single flake in sight.

  • Hats are essentials throughout the colder months. This will keep you cozy and your ears toasty but you will often be left with a bad case of hat hair!
  • Prevention: Try and avoid wearing the hat for too long and with thick heavy fibres if you need to take it off during the day. A volumizing spray spritzed onto your hair before you blow-dry while hanging your head upside down will maximise your volume potential before wearing your hat. To give your hair an extra good shot against falling flat use a volumizing shampoo & conditioner to keep your hair light and carry the spray with you to refresh your style after taking off the hat. Voulmebloom from Matrix Biolage will save you from flat hair all day long!
